English

At Honington CE Primary school we place a high importance on children developing a life-long love of reading and writing and strive to provide a rich and inspiring English curriculum for this to be achieved.
We believe it is vital that our children develop the skills and knowledge not only to be ‘secondary school ready’ but to go on to become confident and effective communicators in the outside world.
In the first instance, we teach your child how to read and write using phonics. Phonics is a method of teaching children to read by linking sounds (phonemes) and the symbols that represent them (graphemes, or letter groups).
At Honington, we use the Little Wandle Phonics Scheme to help your child learn. It aims to build children’s speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven.
You will mostly hear your children talking about Phases 2 and 3 in Reception and Phases 3, 4 and 5 in Year 1. Their phonics learning, however, will continue to be applied in Year 2 and throughout their journey at school.
